Dean Macey is the star of the show at McGregor Lake

Throughout the winter and spring months, teenagers from the ‘Angling for success’ scheme have worked hard at McGregor Lake installing platforms in several of the swims and, as a small thank you, BHAA reserved the lake for them for a day’s fishing. The Association layed on a barbecue too and gave the youngsters complimentary membership for the coming season. A special surprise was the attendance of former Olympic athlete and keen angler Dean Macey who presented prizes to them and helped to make the day a truly memorable event.

During the week, there was a steady stream of big tench being caught at Gingerbread Lake with Paul Saunders landing an 8lb specimen. Colin Burge reported catching three tench from Rob’s swim in two-bar bay including a 9lb 1oz specimen. Colin’s fish all fell to his favourite lobworm bait which they never seem to tire of eating. The road bank swims still seemed to be the most productive area of the lake probably due to the amount of spawning that had taken place there in recent weeks. Floating weed was proving to be a bit of nuisance though, the result of a massive spawning session by the lake’s big carp.

Jared Cooper decided the try his luck in the Links Pool where the carp were less in a spawning mood. In an overnight session, Jared took commons of 25lbs and 18lbs. Local tackle dealer, Dean Beach also fished the same venue and was well pleased to catch a pristine common carp of 20lbs.

Barry Fox and his fishing companion Roger Worth opted for a day at New Road Lake and had yet another memorable day. Barry used fished with a Mainline boilie to catch a super-conditioned 22lb 14oz mirror carp and Roger had a surprise catch in the form of a 17lb 4oz pike which picked up his luncheon meat hook bait. Later in the day, Roger hooked a very heavy fish that he played carefully for ages only to lose it when his hook pulled as the scrap drew to an end.

Bream and carp featured in catches at McGregor Lake with plenty of action coming from swims along the long island. Some parger carp have been spotted in this area too where they are able to gain some degree of sanctuary from the attention of anglers.
