Big bream are on the munch!
The spring weather is finally getting the fish to feed in earnest with some big fish being caught. Alan Wilkie spotted some big shapes on his fish-finder and decided to fish the area the next day. It proved to be a wise decision as Alan went on to catch an 11lb 5oz bream from the Sandy Lakes venue. Nigel Cleaver landed another big bream identical in weight to Alan’s fish. It was not only bream that were starting to actively feed for John Murphy landed two carp mirror weighing 18lb 8oz and 16lb 13oz whilst margin fishing. Barry Fox was well pleased with his latest capture, a 16lb 4oz mirror carp that took his mini boily tipped with an artificial maggot. Nigel Fearon caught a 14lb mirror too.
Rivers and lakes come alive!
Many anglers decided to fish the rivers before the close season shutdown with some great results. Mike Wilmot fished a BHAA controlled stretch of the River Ivel at Sandy when late in the day he hooked and landed a super 7lb chub, a personal best for the angler. Lou Gilhart had found catching Ivel chub a difficult proposition throughout the cold winter months but in a two-day session he hooked and landed no fewer than 7 chub, the best weighing 5lb 8oz from the river in Sandy. Winston Pogmore fished with his friend Gerry Caplin on a little-fished stretch at Sandy catching a 4lb 10oz chub whilst Gerry was pleased to land a 5lb river bream on three maggots. Fraser Hayden had to fish late in the day before he saw any action fishing the River Ouse at Tempsford but then enjoyed a four fish haul of chub weighing 3lb 10oz, 4lbs, 4lb 2oz and 4lb 7oz all falling to small pieces of flavoured meat.

All round angler Alan Wilkie has been targeting big perch in the rivers at the end of the end of the season. Alan could not have gotten away to a better start fishing on the River Ivel for his bait was taken within seconds of making his first cast. The fish turned out to be a 3lb 2oz perch. On his third cast, his bait was again taken within 5 minutes of casting out and this resulted in an even bigger specimen, this time a 4lb 3oz perch. A return visit to the river two days later saw him catch the same 3lb 2oz perch again and from the same swim! A change of venue to the River Ouse at Tempsford produced yet another big perch for Alan, a 2lb 14oz specimen.
Andy lands huge Ouse chub!
Despite cold and dank weather for much of the week, BHAA members continued to catch some really big fish. Andy Moss decided that, after experiencing a number of blanks on previous visits, it was time for a move so he opted to fish a different stretch of the River Ouse. He started fishing at midday using bread crust as bait supplemented by small helpings of mashed up bread but he found light was failing and he was still biteless. The river looked perfect though so Andy baited a couple of swims at dusk and changed his hook bait to an off-the-shelf supermarket special. He fished the first of his baited swims for 4 hours without a bite and with falling temperatures. He moved to his second swim but it was not until 10.30pm that he had a confident bite. The fished turned out to be a new PB for Andy and was a scale-perfect 7lb 1oz chub. Now that it was it can take to catch one!
