Another milestone is reached at Swan Lake

By Kevin Goldsmith • June 11th, 2012

The few anglers that have continued to fish at Swan Lake have been catching some great fish. Pete Housden landed three carp after fishing overnight, mirrors weighing 18lb, 14lb and 31lb 4oz. Luke Garner has caught the first common carp to weigh over 30lbs from the lake, a 30lb 2oz lump. It appears the carp are not yet fully spawned out so are carrying extra pounds at the moment.

Kevin Gormley has continued his hot run at Gingerbread Lake by catching a 33lb 8oz mirror, a little known fish. Kevin has only been fishing short overnight spells avoiding most of the foul weather that persisted for much of the week.

Fisheries officer, Martin Crouch, has been fishing at McGregor Lake where he has enjoyed some great sport from small carp and the odd bream. Martin has been pole-fishing using dead red maggots as bait.

Board members have been working hard over the weekend to create a number of permanent swims at Grace Lake in readiness for the start of the new season. Members will be able to park their vehicles alongside the lake on the concrete road that borders it.
It has been disappointing that so few club members have offered any assistance when many of them have expressed an interest in fishing this new water.

Any tips on fishing swan lake? I have tried a lot of different tactics and baits but catching a carp is proving impossible! I went all of last year without catching one all I caught was bream and eels. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Chris I haven’t fished swan lake but if ur catching bream and eels then ur doing something right, ur bait must be presented well to hook a fish and in the right spots, all I would say is keep ur hooklink well pinned down and I would try alittle more bait and spread it well around your hook bait.

Thanks for your advice. I have tried lots of different ways to present the bait and tried various amounts of bait, it will happen one day or at least I hope it does!

Hi Chris, I’m not much of a carp angler, but offer the following:- At 3 acres this is quite an intimate water, be aware of “angling pressure” and fish unpressured locations. Don’t forget the margins here, a stealthy approach has found me witnessing confidently feeding fish right under my feet on many occasions. Avoid bow string tight lines (including back leading actually), degrease with washing up liquid and just let it sink…. Remember, this is now a 2 rod only water. Good luck, and tight lines. FRASER

Thank you, I’m hoping that now its only 2 rods it will be a bit easier without so many lines in the water. I have a few new ideas to try out this year hopefully I will be down for a couple of days next week to try them out
