Success at British Lure Championship

By Kevin Goldsmith • September 29th, 2014

Congratulations to BHAA member Joanna Davies who was the last qualifier place for the British Lure Championship organised at Ferry Meadows, Peterborough. Lure fishing is becoming very popular lately and Fox in conjunction with Anglers Mail have launched this competition. There were 10 qualifiers for the final and Joanna won the last of these places. The final to select the British Champion will be held at Chew Valley and is to be televised by Sky Sports.

Mark Collins has been having some great results fishing at Gingerbread Lake catching around 17 carp in a little over a fortnight with fish up to high 30s. John Murphy had fished the lake on seven day sessions without a fish and was contemplating hanging up his rods for the winter when he had a bite that took one of his indicators to the top. No doubt it is from a bream John told a watching friend and he thought this to be the case when he eventually struck and felt something on the end. He was winding the fish in when suddenly it woke up and started to fight really hard. Far from being a bream, the fish turned out to be the mirror carp known as the ‘Lookalike’ weighing 36lb14oz.

Winston Pogmore opted for a few hours fishing at Swan Lake and decided to adopt an all or nothing policy heavily baiting his swim with sweetcorn, boilies and vitalin. About 1.30pm he had a run and struck into a fish that, at first, pulled hard for the centre of the lake on his 12lb b.s. line. He managed to turn the fish only for it kite into some overhanging bushes at the side of the swim into which it became entangled. He replaced his rod on his rod rest and a few minutes later the fish swam out into open water and he was eventually able to net it. The fish turned out to be a 31lb 8oz mirror carp, his best ever carp. Successful bait was a 14mm Peach and Mango boily. Leslie Howe has been catching regularly at Swan Lake with a variety of fish including eels, tench and bream. His latest catch was one of the lake’s big bream which he estimated to weigh around 13lbs. It fell to a combination of worm and sweetcorn. Other anglers were enjoying some good catches of roach with fish to over 1/2lb being caught.

Mick Day decided to try his luck on McGregor Lake after a fellow told him about some nice fish he had previously caught there. During the day he caught two super looking mirrors weighing 14lb 8oz and 15lbs. After a few blank sessions, Richard Bartlett caught a couple of nice carp from the lake, a common of around 11lbs and a mirror around 9-10lbs.

Paul Allum and his son introduced a new club member Barry Yates to the River Ivel near Biggleswade where he went on to catch three including fish of 2lb 6oz and 3lbs. Paul Allum jnr. caught a couple of big roach around the 1lb mark, a small jack pike and a baby barbel to make it an exiting day for all.
