Whilst the odd carp is still getting caught, it is pike that have been feeding well at BHAA’s Sandy Lakes complex. Three pike over 20lbs have been reported with the best weighing 28lbs and the other two topping 25lbs. Details of their captors are not yet to hand though.
Alan Wilkie confirmed his recent catches from Swan Lake as being an 18lb 6oz common carp, a 20lb 13oz mirror carp and a 10lb 9oz bream. Alan said his two carp fought long and hard as he was only using light tackle intended for bream. His son Paul visited the lake for the first time since joining the club and soon spotted a good-sized carp surface near his swim. He cast his baited rig to where the fish had risen and, within a few minutes, had a run.

Mark Horspool struck gold on his latest visit to BHAA’s Gingerbread Lake where plenty of sightings of carp have been made but few fish caught. Mark was elated to have caught a 30lb plus common carp but only a few hours later he had a second run that resulted in him catching another huge common. His fish weighed 30lb 14oz and 32lb with one of the fish a long lean fighting machine whilst the other was a superbly proportioned specimen. Another member to catch a big common was Mark Arnold who landed a 33lb common, a new personal best for the angler.
Barry Fox decided to try for pike at a BHAA controlled lake which has received less pressure than some of the others in recent weeks. He mounted a sardine on to a uni-hook rig float-fished about a foot off the bottom. A single take produced yet another huge pike for Barry, this time a 22lb 8oz specimen and his third over the 20lb barrier this season. He fished on until dusk without any further action but, when tackling down, he threw his hook bait into the lake only to see it devoured by yet another big pike. Barry tried a few more casts to see if he could tempt the beast but without further success.
John Murphy. Decided to fish in the Links Pool after he found his preferred swims occupied on Gingerbread Lake. John found that he had to fish tight to the thick lily beds in order to get bites and, as a consequence he lost two good fish that made a dash for cover when hooked. However, he was pleased to land a 10lb 3oz bream, one of the biggest reported from this venue, plus a stockie mirror carp.
Some fabulous catches have been made from BHAA venues over the past fortnight with a new lake record for Gingerbread being set by head bailiff Dave Hallybone. Fishing an overnight session, Dave caught the magnificent ‘Cluster’ weighing 41lb 4oz, a pound heavier than its previous heaviest weight.
