The association has secured two former gravel pits
for fishing. Both lakes will be open will be open year round.
It is planned to stock both lakes with fish in the next few months
developing New Road Lake into a specimen carp water and McGregor
Lake as a mixed fishery.
Night permits will be available on application to the membership
secretary but will be limited.
New Road Lake - Sandy: The lake is developing
into a specimen carp water and has been stocked with heavily scaled
mirror carp obtained from AJS Fisheries, mirror and common carp
from Sporting and Leisure Fisheries and mirror carp from Fisher
Pond Fisheries. Many of the fish stocked have grown at up to 10lbs
per year and fish in excess of 30lbs are anticipated. It took nearly
a year before the carp would pick up anglers’ baits but now
they are readily accepting boilies and most recognised carp baits.
The lake record caught by Kevin Webb currently stands at 28lb 8oz.
Large bream are also present with many exceeding 10lbs and the chance
of catching several of this size in a session. The largest caught
by Ian Harper bottomed 12lb scales but was thought to weigh considerably
more.
There is a good head of pike with specimens caught up to mid twenties.
A member recently reported losing the biggest roach he had ever
seen and he has caught specimens to over 2lbs elsewhere. Large eels
and rudd are also present.
McGregor Lake - Sandy: The lake was stocked with
several thousand small carp both mirrors and commons but larger
specimens to over 20lbs are present. There is a thriving population
of tench with fish up to nearly 9lbs being landed. Bream from skimmers
to double-figure specimens are caught too and there is always the
chance of landing a roach/bream hybrid. There are some very large
perch in the lake with 3lb specimens regularly caught. The lake
record currently stands at 3lb 14oz caught by Alan Wilkie. Some
big eels are also present no doubt feeding on the large numbers
of small roach, rudd and skimmers available to them. Two exotic
species have been caught too namely orfe to over 4lbs and golden
rudd.
Popular baits include worms, maggots, sweetcorn and mini boilies
that have all accounted for fish.
