Walker's Pitch

The name Walker in the angling world is synonymous with only one man, Richard Walker, who has been the most famous personality in angling since Isaac Walton first penned his book ‘The Complete Angler’. Biggleswade and Hitchin Angling Association (BHAA) can claim to have a close affinity with Richard Walker. The Association was formed as a result of a merger between two long-established local clubs, Biggleswade Angling Club and Hitchin & District Angling Association (HDAA). It was on one of HDAA’s waters, the legendary Arlesey Lake, that Richard pioneered his revolutionary ledger weight, the Arlesey Bomb, which almost every angler will carry in his tackle box. Also, Richard was the President of the former Association for many years and presented awards to aspiring anglers at the AGMs. In his later years, he moved to a house in the town of Biggleswade from where he could fish the River Ivel for chub and barbel from the bottom of his garden.

It is pleasing that the town’s only fishing tackle shop is called Walker’s Pitch in tribute to the great man, a move that was fully supported by Richard’s widow. Walker’s Pitch is a proud supporter of BHAA from where anglers can purchase club membership books. The shop has an extensive range of the latest fishing tackle and bait to cover all tastes from match angling, specimen hunting to pleasure angling. The proprietor, Simon Carr, is well known on the big fish scene and will willingly impart his knowledge on angling in the locality including carp, barbel and chub fishing. Simon regularly fishes BHAA’s waters himself and is kept well informed with what’s being caught, when and where and by whom! If you want to benefit from Simon’s expertise, why not pop into his shop or visit the shop’s dedicated website, www.walkerspitch.co.uk.
