Xmas presents to and from the Ivel!

An unexpected but much needed boost to fish stocks took place last week when around 4000 roach were stocked into the River Ivel at the former Sandy Mill Pool. The stocking was carried out by the Environment Agency as part of its ongoing strategy of improving the fish population throughout the river.

Paul Elt braved near arctic conditions to fish but was rewarded with a number of cracking chub. During the day, Paul trotted maggots though his swim landing five chub to 5lb 4oz. As light started to fade, he opted for a change of tactics by switching to a maggot feeder and, within a few minutes, hooked and lost a good fish. He recast quickly and soon afterwards had another confident take. He struck and was soon playing his best-ever Ivel chub, a 6lb specimen.

Walker’s Pitch proprietor, Simon Carr, also ventured out in the cold conditions and found chub to be in a feeding mood. He too trotted maggots to catch three nice fish to over 5lbs as well as suffering a line break on a much heavier fish.

Please note that this will be the last report until the New Year but please keep your reports coming as they will be featured as soon as the website resumes.
