Second Open Day at McGregor Lake exceeds all expectations

Around 50 participants enjoyed themselves at BHAA’s second Open Day held at McGregor Lake with everyone who fished catching, at least, one fish. Fish caught were mainly roach, rudd and skimmers but the odd small carp and perch were also landed. Those who attended were a mixture of novice anglers and persons who had returned to the sport after gaps of many years. All tackle and bait was provided free of charge by the Club and there were both hot and cold drinks available throughout the day together with a variety of snack foods whenever the anglers fancied a break. The Environment Agency representative brought along a fish tank too so that the youngsters could observe how the fish they caught behaved. Once again, our thanks go out to Simon Carr of Walker’s Pitch who did much to promote the event and provided tackle vouchers for every new participant. The sun shone and the fish bit to make it a memorable experience for all. Several of the participants decided to join the Club there and then, a testament to the all of the effort put in by the organizers.

Firefighter Del Orchard has had a cracking second season at Gingerbread Lake where he has caught carp to over 20lbs and tench into double-figures. Del crowned his season when a single run produced a perfectly-conditioned 31lb half linear mirror carp. A new member, Kevin Gormley, got off to a flyer by banking carp weighing 25lbs and 20lbs. Also, Kevin reckoned he spotted a massive pike whilst he was waliking around the lake looking for signs of feeding fish.

There have been few anglers fishing at Swan Lake in recent weeks where the fish have proved to be somewhat elusive. However, lake regular Nigel Cleaver fished overnight to catch a 15lb common carp and a 21lb 8oz mirror carp. Both of Nigel’s fish fell to popped-up tiger nuts.

A club member reported catching a carp from McGregor Lake weighing 26lbs which breaks the previous record by nearly 4lbs. He took a photograph of the fish on his camera phone but, unfortunately, his phone packed up and the picture was lost. Reports have been received of another big tench from the venue, a 9lb specimen. During the week there have been several good-sized carp caught with fish to mid-doubles. Winston Pogmore landed a pristine 12lb 8oz mirror carp when his ledgered lobworms were taken. Float anglers were getting plenty of fish on maggots too’
