John can’t stop smiling since catching a new p.b.!

Whilst many anglers have been struggling to get to grips with the dense weed beds that are covering much of the lake, John Hayden has found Gingerbread Lake much to his liking. On a recent trip, John broke the 30lb barrier after catching a 35lb 2oz linear mirror carp. This fish has put on around 5lbs in weight over the last two years no doubt taking advantage of the abundant amount of rich wood available. Fellow angler John Murphy has found carp difficult to locate since catching ‘Cluster’ earlier in the season but has been regularly catching bream and tench on his carp baits. This week was no exception as he added yet another 7lb 4oz tench to his catch list and was unfortunate to lose a big bream too.

Sport at McGregor Lake has continued apace with plenty of roach and bream being caught close to the margins on float tackle. There have been plenty of carp caught too to low doubles but anglers have reported greater success when fishing away from the popular trackside swims where the fish are becoming increasingly wary of anglers’ baits.

Nigel Cleaver reported a four fish haul of carp from Swan Lake with his best fish just topping the 20lb mark. Conor Young thought his luck had changed after a quiet night’s fishing but at 8am his buzzers gave an early indication of fish feeding in his swim. A few minutes later his alarm screamed out and he was into a good carp. The fish turned out to be a mirror carp weighing 15lb 8oz. Anglers float-fishing have reported catching plenty of roach on both maggots and sweetcorn. During the week though, double-figured bream and carp have been rolling on the surface yet have been reluctant to pick up anglers’ baits indicating an abundance of natural food.
