Mild spell brings more good catches

Quality roach fishing is hard to find these days thanks to the decimation of fish stocks by gluttonous cormorants but one fishery that is bucking this trend is Swan Lake at Sandy. Mike Baldwin pole-fished there during the week using casters as bait and caught over 40 good-sized roach up to 12-14oz. Mike said his catch would have been even larger if pike had not been attracted into the swim upsetting the roach. Another angler margin fished and caught two good-sized carp showing that these fish were back on the feed too.

Bream to 5lbs were caught from McGregor Lake where the tactics being used were to target loose feed at some distance from the bank and then to swim feed maggots into the baited area.

David Rainbow fished the River Ivel near Biggleswade after the river levels started to drop using a swim feeder and maggots as bait. He started fishing in the early afternoon and, after only an hour’s fishing, he hooked into a powerful fish. It turned out to be a 16lb 12oz barbel and was his second over 15lbs from the stretch this season as well as being a new personal best. After weighing and photographing, the fish was carefully returned and swam off strongly
