Since the spring floods, all of Gingerbread Lake’s known big carp had been caught with one notable exception, ‘Cluster’, the lake’s record mirror. The doom and gloom merchants were beginning to speculate as to whether the big fish may have escaped or even died. Ian Warner was able to put their minds at rest though when he finally caught the fish weighing 41lb 3oz together with another big mirror weighing 30lb 4oz lbs. Ian Fisher has concentrated on fishing swims often neglected by other anglers and his tactics reaped huge dividends for him in the form of two 30lb plus mirrors caught on the same day. The two fish weighed 30lb 4oz and 31lbs respectively. Polish angler Slawek ‘Figo’ Figura caught another of the lake’s sought after residents, the cut-tail common carp weighing 29lb 12oz. Another big mirror carp weighing 39lbs was caught too thought to be the fish known as ‘The Lookalike’ or ‘Cluster Clone’. Keith Hoggett reported catching a stunning brace of fish on pellets, a 10lb 4oz bream and a surprise 20lb pike.
Anglers fishing at McGregor Lake have been catching carp in numbers as the water temperature continued to rise during the week. Tom Warren fished overnight at Swan Lake but caught two carp before nightfall weighing 17lbs and 16lbs. David Rainbow fished the lake for only the second time and was well pleased to net a hard fighting 18lb 10oz mirror carp whilst fishing in near gale force winds. Fraser Hayden has noticed that the big bream were all down in weight after the long winter and has struggled to catch his usual double-figure specimens. On a recent trip, he caught an 8lb 5oz specimen in the early morning after a fruitless night. Another angler spotted some fish moving and decided to change swims so he could cast towards them. In a short space of time he caught two carp , a near 24lb mirror carp and a 15lb common.
A big ‘Thank You’ is owed to Bob Fairey who almost single-handedly has filled the potholes along the track to greatly improve access to the lakes. Finally, clearance has been received to proceed with the construction of a new road around Gingerbread Lake to the Links Pool and it is hoped work will begin shortly. Whilst this work is going on, vehicular access will be restricted but it is should only be for 2-3 days.
Initial supplies of membership books for the coming season 2013-14 have now been distributed to sales outlets except Bleak Hall Sports where they should also be by the weekend.
