BHAA waters to receive new stocks of fish

BHAA members will be pleased to learn that several new stockings of fish are to take place in the near future. Grace Lake is to receive a further stocking of crucian carp at the end of the month with around 1000 fish to be introduced. In addition, around 500 tench will also be stocked at the same time. Orders have been placed for mirror and common carp to be stocked into both McGregor and Gingerbread Lakes early in the New Year. Finally, the Environment Agency will be introducing about 250 barbel into the River Ivel at Tempsford as part of its ongoing programme to establish the species into the lower reaches of this river. This will mean that the EA and the Association will have jointly stocked over 600 barbel into the river at Tempsford so far.

Chairman Neil Sampson has begun his winter campaign on the rivers and has got off to a great start. He decided to target a BHAA controlled stretch of the Ivel at Sandy from where he caught two cracking chub weighing 4lb 10oz and 5lb 6oz using cheese paste to tempt the beauties.

Pike anglers have been out in force on all of the Association’s main lakes. A 20lb specimen was reportedly caught at Swan Lake whilst McGregor Lake has produced a number of good-sized fish to 17lbs. Carp were still feeding in Swan Lake but nearly all of the action was taking place in the hours of darkness.

The December meeting of the of the local Pike Angling Club will be held at The Wingfield Club, Ampthill on the 11th of the month when the recently retired ex-Chairman of the Angling Trust, Mike Heylin, will be present. He will be giving a talk on zander fishing on the river Severn as well as the first four years of the Angling Trust’s existence. Later in the evening, there will be a pike-based quiz to test your knowledge. Contact for further details.
