The mighty maggot strikes again!

Conditions were far from ideal when Richard Hurst decided to fish a stretch of the River Ivel near Biggleswade using a feeder and a single red maggot on the hook. Recent heavy rains had resulted in a constant flow of surface debris making bait presentation difficult. Nevertheless, Richard had a terrific session landing a 2lb perch, a pristine roach about 1lb 8oz and a huge 6lb 7oz chub, a new personal best for the angler. Dave Rawlins ventured out on Xmas Day for a spot of fishing opting to fish the Common stretch downstream of Biggleswade known to hold plenty of sizeable chub. David fished with a maggot feeder too with his hook baited with four maggots. He went on to catch a pristine chub weighing 5lb 11oz, a perfect Xmas present! BHAA Chairman Neil Sampson fished a club stretch of the Ivel at Langford where he caught six chub between 4 and 5lbs.

The next meeting of the local PAC will be held at The Wingfield Club, 37 Church Street, Ampthill, MK45 2PL with a 7.30pm start. The guest speaker will be Chris Ponsford who is the co-producer of the video ‘Fenland Pike’ so the evening should be full of fishy tales and tips on how to find those elusive monsters. All anglers are asked to report all incidents of poaching and fish theft to the Environment Agency via its incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60 and the local police by dialling 101.

Between the downpours, Paul Wilkie fished an overnight session at McGregor Lake where he found the lake’s carp still to be feeding well. He caught carp weighing 8lbs, 10lbs and 15lb 6oz during his visit whilst Robert Livock managed to land a 9lb mirror when he spotted it jump out near the end of one of the islands. He cast one of his baits in the general area and later in the day it was taken by the hungry fish.
