Fish feeding well as autumn approaches

Mike Broom has been getting to grips with Gingerbread Lake’s carp over the past few weeks. He caught a long common weighing 27lb 10oz and a 15lb mirror despite hooking and losing two other carp whilst bottom fishing. He changed to floater fishing to take a 23lb 4oz mirror and another smaller fish of !2lbs. Mike has spent some time spotting fish in the early morning when walking around the lake including many ‘bubblers’ indicating feeding fish. Kevin Barrable banked a 24lb common carp during an overnight session at the lake whilst Winston Pogmore caught two more eels during the daytime using sea mussels as bait. Geoffrey Knowles caught roach on hemp and corn and capped his visit with a 7lb 12oz tench that took a single grain of sweetcorn in 8ft of water.

A new member, Stephen Jeff, got off to a cracking start fishing at McGregor Lake catching mirror carp weighing 18lb 8oz, 6lb and 3lb plus a bonus 5lb tench. This lake will be hosting another of the club’s Open Days on Saturday, the 23rd of August, aimed at novice anglers or those returning to the sport who may wish to brush up on their methods with coaches on hand to offer guidance.

Roger Scott has been fishing BHAA’s stretches of the River Ouse upstream of Bedford. He fished at Manor Farm, Lavendon where he caught bream to 5lb 14oz plus roach, chublets and a perch. Fishing at Priory Farm, Harrold, he caught roach on seed and corn as well as a 4lb 4oz tench but was saddened to see how little both stretches were being fished.

The Allum family have continued to enjoy their fishing lower downstream on the River Ouse at Tempsford. Paul Allum (jnr) caught two eels amongst a mixed bag of over 20 fish while Dave Allum banked a perch of over 2lbs. Paul Allum returned another day to catch a fine 2lb 6oz perch.
