It’s taken 27 years but I got there in the end!

Bailiff and board member Mick Usher was one of the first anglers to fish at Gingerbread Lake after it started to gain a reputation as a specimen carp more than twenty years ago. Although regularly fishing the lake and catching numerous carp, he had never broken the 30lb barrier. However, this weekend his goal was finally reached when he caught a 39lb 11oz mirror carp, a UK personal best. In addition to his big carp, he caught several nice bream in the 5-7lb range too and two pike that had a penchant for boilies. The lake is currently full of roach giving plenty of sport to anglers who target them. The odd tench was finding its way to the net too as sport continues to pick up.

Bites at Swan Lake had been hard to come by in recent weeks as carp stubbornly refused to feed but this changed at the weekend when, at least, five carp were banked with the best reportedly weighing 31lbs.

The number 15 featured in reports of captures from McGregor Lake this week. Membership Secretary Anthony Pogmore fished at the lake following his capture of a nice tench from Gingerbread Lake and, within a couple of hours of fishing, he landed a hard-fighting 15lb mirror. His fish fell to an Amber Cream boilie fished in conjunction with a PVA bag of freebies .Another angler fishing the lake on the same day did even better by catching, at least, 3 carp to over 15lbs. Finally, young Max Austin opened his account when he caught a 15lb 1oz mirror carp using a Robin Red boilie as bait.

Our bailiffs are on the look out for a foreign member of our club who has been seen using no less than 4 rods at McGregor Lake when the limit is 2 on this fishery. The individual risks losing his club membership when caught. Also, he tries to make out that he does not understand English yet has been overheard talking on the phone clearly in the mother tongue. Anyone witnessing individuals breaking club rules may ask them to produce their respective club books and then to report their details and the offence to the club secretary.

Members are reminded that McGregor Lake will be closed for an Over 60s Club match on Wednesday, 19th August until the match is over. Other lakes on the Sandy complex will remain open.

Finally, congratulations to Paul Wixey for winning our July photo competition with his photo of a 15lb common carp caught from McGregor Lake.
