And Now For Something Completely Different

By Alan Davies • October 9th, 2017

Club member Dave Smith on a recent visit to the River Ivel at Tempsford had something completely different to the normal river capture when a large brown trout grabbed his bait, spending more time out of the water than in it while playing it. Dave would like to know if it was a true brown trout as he commented that the tail and mouth was more salmon like.

Anthony Pogmore returned to McGregor Lake after a recent holiday and had 4 carp during the week upto 17lb 8oz, all the carp fell to snowman rigs. A new member on his first visit to the lake reported catching a 16lb carp from the area behind the main island.

Members are asked to take care when using the bridge to gain access to the island at Mcgregor Lake due to damage to one of the boards, which hopefully should be repaired soon

Re the fish caught by David Smith on the Ivel at Tempsford….Definitely a big old Brown Trout.

Male brownies grow what is known as a kype (hooked bottom jaw) and often look a lot darker in colour as they approach spawning time. This is late Autumn/Early winter unlike our river coarse fish.

A male brown trout if the salmon-like feature was a kype (ie hook on the bottom jaw). I hope it was returned since we need them to breed in the Ivel and also after the end of September they are out of season I think
