News Update: 9th June 2023

Lake regular Ionut Cires has caught one of the most sought-after fish at Gingerbread Lake, a magnificent common carp weighing 44lb 6oz.It seems to be a fish that has taken a liking to Ionut’s baits as it is a fish, he has caught on six occasions over recent years. The hot weather has triggered some massive spawning activity with the lake’s carp all but destroying the weed beds that were beginning to surface. On the subject of weed, members may wish to note that the lake will be closed for the week commencing 7th August when specialist weed removal will take place in an effort to control its excessive growth.

Relatively few catch reports have been received from anglers fishing McGreor Lake but it appears that some super catches have been enjoyed by members fishing there. Tom Lacey has a day session at the lake when he caught 6 big mirror carp weighing 24lb 6oz, 23lb 6oz, 20lb 2oz, 22lb 4oz and two mid to upper doubles (not weighed). Tom was happy to share his tactical approach which was to fish with solid PVA bags over a carpet of particles. A board member reported that he had caught over 80 carp from the lake during the year with all being double figured fish over 10lbs.

Sport on Swan Lake slowed during the week probably due to the carp getting ready to spawn. Steve Curtin landed a 21lb 6oz mirror carp during a day session whilst a member known affectionately as ‘Spodder Graham’ had a three carp haul during an overnight session which included one carp over 20lbs and another topping 30lbs.

Members are requested not to fish for any species when they are aware that they are engaged in spawning activity.

Membership books for the forthcoming season are being issued. Members should read the book’s content to familiarise themselves with the club rules and the renewal arrangements for subsequent years. Notice boards have been erected at the Sandy Lakes Fishery and at Gingerbread Lake for the Eaton Socon fishery and members are asked to take the time to read the notices.
