In recent weeks, the Sandy lakes have produced pike up to 22lbs but there have been larger specimens caught from both McGregor and Swan Lakes in previous years.

Short session carp

With the weather improving Alan Davies and a friend had a quick after work session on McGregor Lake and in 3 hours fishing had 6 runs which resulted in 4 carp upto 15lb, tactics involved casting to rolling fish with all the runs coming within 15 minutes of casting

The cold weather is alluring!

In the wintery conditions, Simon Izzard put his carp rods away and decided to go for pike instead. He decided to lure fish at Gingerbread Lake and was successful in catching several pike up to low doubles. Another two carp were reported being caught at the lake too showing that the fish are now starting to move despite the icy conditions. At Swan Lake, four carp were caught over the previous weekend including, at least, two over 20lbs.

Welcome to the club!

The current changeable weather has affected sport with few reports of fish captures being received but predator anglers are beginning to catch a number of pike with signs of fish boiling on the surface as they hunt shoals of small roach and rudd. A member fishing at Swan Lake reported catching a 16lb 10oz pike after landing a smaller jack pike earlier in the day.

Later season tench caught

Several members have confirmed that most of the action from carp at McGregor Lake was being experienced in the evenings and after dark. Alan Wilkie fished the lake on a couple of occasions staying on until nightfall and it has enabled him to catch two good-sized carp from the lake, a 15lb 11oz mirror and another weighing 18lb 13oz. He added that his bigger fish fell to a snowman rig using 10lb b.s. line and ‘Avon’ rods giving him a 20 minute scrap.

Another nice perch falls to a lure

Please note that the Over 60s club will be fishing a match at McGregor Lake on Wednesday, 29th of September. Other lakes on the Sandy complex will remain open to members to fish on this day.

Alan Wilkie caught a pristine 13lb common whilst day fishing at Swan Lake. He said that he caught the fish only inches away from the margins rather than trying to tempt one from frequently fished hotspots located at range.
